Test Data
In 2003, engineering researchers at Washington State University conducted tests to compare the structural and environmental properties of five cold mix asphalt concrete products. The study, "An Evaluation of Cold Mixed Asphalt Concretes," looked at three high-performance brands (including U.S. Cold Patch), a commercial grade, and a generic brand. The structural tests followed AASHTO and ASTM protocols to evaluate such properties as tensile strength, visco-elastic modulus and creep properties; the environmental tests followed protocols recommended by the EPA and the state of California to evaluate air and water emissions.
The results confirm that U.S. Cold Patch is the strongest, most durable, and most environmentally friendly cold mix asphalt product on the market.
Among the research findings:
U.S. Cold Patch has more than twice the tensile strength (breaking load) of the other products.
U.S Cold Patch is the most rut resistant cold mix - nearly three times more so than the closest competitor.
U.S. Cold Patch scored highest on the test for resistance to deformation (stiffness), with a result 35% higher than the requirement for hot mix asphalt under heavy traffic.
U.S. Cold Patch produced the fewest emissions. Its total organic carbon content is significantly below those of competitive brands - and 60 times below that of MC-250, the product that placed second in the structural testing.
The proven benefits of U.S. Cold Patch:
In strength and durability U.S. Cold Patch rates closest to hot mix of all the cold-mix asphalts.
U.S. Cold Patch is the only brand of bagged cold asphalt made from recycled asphalt pavement (60+% by weight).
With no added petroleum solvents, U.S. Cold Patch has virtually no odor and is lowest in VOC emissions of all cold asphalts.
U.S. Cold Patch sets up hardens immediately through compaction, not evaporation.
U.S. Cold Patch has the longest shelf life of any cold asphalt.
There are no temperature or weather restrictions for storing or applying U.S. Cold Patch.
